“I invested. This is our future”

Becoming one of 2025’s most surprising early hits, buddy comedy One of Them Days came out of nowhere to gain a collation of great reviews and audience sentiment to showcase that there’s well and truly still space for throwback like comedies that use to litter cinema complexes through the 80’s until the mid 2000’s.

The feature debut of director Lawrence Lamont and also the feature debut of musical superstar SZA, Days is for all intents and purposes a rather generically plotted affair that transpires over the course of one day in the life of SZA’s problem making Alyssa and her best friend/room mate Dreux (an MVP Keke Palmer) as the two low-class strugglers battle to find rent money to keep a roof over their heads but proving that sometimes you don’t need to teach an old dog new tricks, Days works in its simplicity and thrives off its old-school nature.

Understanding that it doesn’t want to be anything that it’s not and working with what its got, Days is far from a classic of the comedic variety but across its brisk feeling 90 minute runtime Lamont ensures his feature is always moving and recognising the wins it can get from the chemistry between Palmer and SZA, Days remains always enjoyable even though it adds up to nothing more than a slight and entertaining distraction.

With a few scene-stealing appearances from the likes of Lil Rel Howery, Maude Apatow and Katt Williams, there’s fun to be had throughout Alyssa and Dreux’s cross city adventures but the best of times for this fun and frivolous event always comes back to Palmer and SZA who will both surely be targeted by Hollywood in the near future to reteam for more big screen partnerships.

It seems somewhat odd to be celebrating a film with a global box office haul of $50 million but for both big screen comedies and cheap original films people will get off their couch to go and watch, Days is a positive reminder that there’s still a market for this type of product and still an ability to work with well-worn formulas to make winning products that don’t need to reinvent the wheel or try and be anything more than what they are.

Final Say –

Akin to being transported back to the comedic heydays of the 90s and early 2000’s, One of Them Days is refreshingly old-school in its approach and goals and gives us an enjoyable experience that will soon be forgotten. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

  2. You hit the nail on the head with “an enjoyable experience that will soon be forgotten.” I described it as “comedy comfort food.” You’re right – back in the 1990s, there was a movie like this (buddy comedy or sibling comedy) coming out once a month. There’s something about Palmer I don’t like (I didn’t like her in “Nope” either) but not so much that I’m willing to die on that hill.
