2014 Oscars – Final Predictions
By Jordan and Eddie
When Oscar nominations were announced this year it became abundantly clear just how up in the air a majority of the categories are going to end up being as on the night any film has a chance to snatch victory in its respective field.
One suspects that Best Picture is down to a 3 way battle between Gravity, 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle but a total counting out of Her is also not a wise move. If Gravity does not walk away with the big gong of the night it will wipe the floor with many of the “tech” categories whilst the hard fought battles will be raged around it in the other nominations.
It was an interesting year last year for films and the Oscars showcase this, both Jordan and Eddie below look to add a few thoughts each to how they feel about the overall nominations and then go ahead and predict a winner and underdog in each category. We look forward to watching on the night and seeing if we’re in the ball park or right off the planet but either way it should be some sort of night!
Jordan’s Overview –
Most happy about?
12 Years a Slave love
Sure, given the Academy’s soft spot for dramas based on racial injustices and movies of this period it may have been quite predictable, but the recognition given to McQueen’s opus is still a good sign that the Oscars will remain relevant for a little while longer yet.
Most unhappy about?
Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts both being nominated for the same ignored and under-seen film! Plus undeserved kudos for Wolf of Wall Street
Seriously, two of the most irksome actresses to ever grace the big screen being nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for August: Osage County, a movie with a 64% Rotten Tomatoes rating. I swear that Streep could fart her way through a Scary Movie sequel and be praised for it.
Also, The Wolf of Wall Street was scarcely more than a glorified fraternity comedy with outstanding production values… though still not outstanding enough to warrant even one of its many big nominations.
Biggest Surprise?
The Best Foreign Language Film category
Why did they even bother with 5 nominees? It’s so obvious that Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt will win, and being the best film of last year in general, it most certainly deserves to.
Biggest Snub?
The Conjuring and Prisoners
I realise that they’re not the types of films usually featured on the big night, but the costume design, as well as sound mixing and editing in James Wan’s The Conjuring are of an expert fashion, and Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance as Detective Loki in the highly effective Prisoners, as well as Denis Villeneuve’s direction both deserved credit.
Lucky to be there?
Captain Phillips for Best Picture. Wolf of Wall Street for Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor, Director, etc…
It was tense and the acting was of a high order (though of course poor Hanks did miss out on a nod), but Captain Phillips is still no Best Picture contender… really the only thing that sets it apart from a regular hostage thriller that would normally star Bruce Willis is the location and budget. See above for my ramblings on Wall Street.
Eddie’s Overview –
Most happy about?
Leonardo DiCaprio, Gravity and 12 Years a Slave just rewards
It’s great to see Leonardo DiCaprio get into the Best Actor category, at times I was worried that he would be overlooked for his great turn here. In other aspects it’s great to see both 12 Years a Slave and Gravity with a respective 9 and 10 nominations each.
Most un-happy about?
American Hustle Love, Nebraska love
I will get panned for this but American Hustle, seriously 10 nominations? Being this year’s flavor of the month and pretty much the same as its cousin Silver Linings Playbook (in that it is so overhyped its almost unbearable) has allowed Hustle to in my opinion get way more than it’s dues as it’s a film I doubt in years to come people will be talking about. I also question the amount of Nebraska love as it seems just like Russell director Payne could make almost anything and get a token nomination over the likes of Paul Greengrass who did a lot more in the directing stakes with his take of Captain Phillips.
Biggest surprise?
Tom Hanks missing out, love for Dallas Buyers Club
Wowie how did Tom Hanks miss out for his arguably career best performance in Captain Phillips? To think that Bale took his spot is a little hard to swallow also. Dallas Buyers Club is a film made worthy thanks to its performances and it’s extra nominations came as a real surprise as if one were to take away Leto and McConaughey one feels this is nothing more than a TV movie of the week.
Biggest Snub?
Inside Llewyn Davis and Prisoners
Unfortunately I have yet to see Llewyn Davis but it’s almost complete snubbing came as a massive surprise to me after reading reviews and considering the critical darlings the Coen Brothers are in the industry. I don’t want to rant but for Prisoners to only get one Oscar nomination (equal alongside Bad Grandpa!) is a mighty insult to such a finely acted and constructed thriller.
Lucky to be there?
Meryl Streep, Dallas Buyers Club (bar it’s actors)
You get that feeling don’t you that Meryl Streep could almost turn up and sit on a chair for 2 hours and she would be nominated on name alone and her turn here in August: Osage County looked so overblown that the trailer in itself was barely tolerable. Despite 2013 being a little lacking in quality female performances for Streep to get in for this turn is pretty bewildering. As mentioned before take away its leads is Dallas Buyers Club best picture material? I think not.

OSCAR WIN TALLY
So there you have it! Let us know what your thoughts are on who the winners and losers might be in the comments below.
Interesting thoughts. And very, very thorough! I’m rooting for 12 Years a Slave. Gravity wasn’t a bad film but it doesn’t hold a candle to the former in my opinion. I guess we’ll see on Sunday.
That will be a hard fought battle that one mate. It’s hard to gage what is holding more good will in the voters eyes just at the minute. You’d have to hope that 12 Years is rewarded for its powerful portrayal of not only a story but a time in history.
Eddie
Good luck! I’m hoping to get back on playing this next year as my pre-Oscar game was really pathetic this year. I didn’t see enough to even begin to make predictions. 🙂
It’s always good to be on board that train makes the night a lot of fun or really sad if your predictions fall flat. Jordan and I both have widely different win totals this year so we are looking forward to seeing who gets closest.
Eddie
One Oscar for American Hustle sounds about right. 🙂 My pick for best original screen play is Her all the way. 🙂
I would love Hustle to only get that 1 would make me very happy. I to hope Her beats it in original screenplay 🙂
Eddie
Nice write up. I’m thinking about doing one of these tomorrow, but just for the main categories. Agreed about snubs and overrates.
Sweet Jackson we will keep our eyes peeled for your thoughts, enjoy the telecast on Sunday.
Eddie
Jordan, I thoroughly agree on feeling like the Conjuring didn’t get a nom was akin to highway robbery with it’s FX and set and sound design as well as editing. Haven’t seen Prisoners yet, it wasn’t a top priority for me since one of the other reviewers of FFR covered it, is it worth checking out?
Also, I was curious why both of you feel like Jennifer Lawrence deserves the Supporting Actress nom… I understand she’s become a bit of a critical and public darling, but I didn’t take away much from her performance, so I’d love to get some insight and hear what you guys thought since you’re one of the lucky few not still totally entranced by Silver Linings Playbook.
You have to check out Prisoners mate a top quality thriller with some fantastic performances and direction.
In regards to myself picking Lawrence I have yet to see Hustle but in picking Lawrence I sadly believe she will win purely due to her insane rep in Hollywood at the moment, don’t count out Lupita though.
Eddie
Hey mate, the fact is that The Conjuring was a more accomplished film that 95% of the dramas released last year in general! Those 3 categories you mentioned it definitely should’ve been nominated for… and even costumes!
Jordan
What an excellent list! I love how different your perspectives are. It is such a close competition this year, I feel like most of the contenders really deserve to be there (maybe with a few less nominations for American Hustle, though). BUT, I totally agree that Prisoners and The Conjuring got snubbed. They both turned in some incredible performances… Farmiga was awesome in Conjuring, and Villeneuve at least deserved a nomination for Prisoners… on that note so did Gyllenhaal.
Oh well, I’m still excited to see how they turn out on Sunday!
Thanks for the kind words 🙂 should be a great night on Sunday, but would of loved some more Prisoners and Inside Llewyn Davis of the night.
Eddie
I am admittedly a Simon Pegg/Edgar Wright homer, but I was disappointed “The World’s End” got no love from Oscar this year even though I knew it wouldn’t.
Haha, yep I reckon you’re a lone campaigner there. Personally I much preferred Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
Jordan
Nice to see another exhaustive list here guys!! Some very good predictions, even though I have to disagree with the Nebraska thoughts. I thought that to be an incredible picture, but it won’t win.
Where we agree: 1) I think Meryl Streep/August: Osage County also seemed extremely overblown and I’m proud to say I’ve avoided it. 2) Blanchett is pretty much going home with the Best Actress. I hated Blue Jasmine, but she was phenomenal. 3) the Tom Hanks snub is the definitive “Wtf” moment of this year’s Oscars.
Cheers Tom, they’re fun to write so we’ll keep doing ’em!
One of the judging panel members actually came out and plainly said Streep’s performance is average at best and Julia Robert’s is plainly awful in Osage, which was brilliant to hear, ha.
Jordan
Completely agree about Jake Gylenhaal in Prisoners! That was one of my favorite perofrmances of the year, subtle and layered, and to be snubbed by the oscars is such a shame but not surprising really!
It seems the general public really got into Prisoners a lot more than the critics, perhaps it was not topical enough for them? But in the end it remains one of last years best and should have a long shelf life.
Eddie
Great piece guys. As long as American Hustle doesn’t get a clean sweep on the night, I’ll be happy. Would love to see Her and The Hunt get awards – my favourites of last year by quite a way!
Great thoughts man I hope I am right with my thinking Hustle will only get one win,Her beating it in the original screenplay would be pure gold.
Eddie
Nice list Gents! I feel that this was a pretty strong year for Oscar Nominated films top to bottom. I appreciate your list and how thorough it was. In my list I didn’t bother with some categories like sound editing, I’m lazy like that. I appreciate your site. Keep up the good work!
Ha never bad to be abut lazy mate, it will be an interesting night at the awards to see exactly what the Academy gives its main love to.
Eddie
I agree that Wolf of Wall Street has received a little too much praise. Leo gives one of the best performances of his career, but that’s the film’s only exceptional quality. I also agree that the biggest snub is Inside Llewelyn Davis. Where’s the love for that one?
Glad you agree! It seems that a lot of viewers were swept away in its frenetic energy and didn’t really take time to observe whether there was really anything of substance to it.
Maybe the Academy is just sick of seeing the Coens make so many fantastic films? ha.
Jordan
You mean…they don’t base their votes solely on talent? *comment dripping with sarcasm*
I have heard so many good things about Prisoners. I need to watch it. Her is brilliant. I may get flamed, but I think Julia Roberts always plays herself and isn’t a great actress.
Oh spot on with Mrs Roberts 🙂 you have to get on board Prisoners a really well made and well acted potboiler. The directors news film Enemy looks great to.
Eddie
This year the Oscar winners are quite predictable, I’m not expecting any major surprises. I completely agree with The Conjuring being one of the biggest snubs, but it’s a winner in my heart…haha!
Ha, well I’m sure James Wan would be satisfied with that..
I now think that Lupita Nyong’o will win best supporting actress, but other than that I stand by my picks… I think.
Jordan
Great post! I mostly agreed with Eddie on the major categories although I think Lupita will win. Lawrence doesn’t even derseve a nomination. Oh and I really liked Wolf on Wall Street. If Chiwetel can’t win it would be great for Leo to win.
I also don’t get the American Hustle love. Silver linings Playbook was a better movie IMO.
Can’t wait mate only a few hours left! Let’s bring on the 12 Years and Gravity love and all the rest can sit back and enjoy their acceptance speeches.
Eddie
Cheers to that! :). Angelo
Our dreams came true mate, totally stoked.
Eddie
Totally agree about American Hustle! so overrated and hyped. The Oscars is mostly voted for by old white men, maybe its nostalgia? There’s not even a compelling “hustle” in the movie, the ending was a cheap shot at grounding the movie to what it supposed to be.
I think the movie was released at the ideal time before the nomination process and for some reason people got caught up in its vast excess of bear bellies, comb overs, low cut dresses and Americas sweetheart J-Law. I am thinking it will only walk away with the one award 😉
Eddie
and they got nothing! mwahahahahahahahahaha!
Justice has been served! An absolutely perfect outcome.
Eddie
As much as I do enjoy awards season and the Oscars (to the point that I have been host to an Oscar Party for 11 years), I am starting to enjoy the Oscars less and less… they obviously come at a bad time, when awards fatigue and predictability are at their peak (I mean, pretty much all the acting nominees won all major precursor awards! Pretty much a no brainer for me on that front!). The show isn’t that funny and tight as it could be, or as the Golden Globes are… that being said, I look forward to a year of surprises, a better host, and a ceremony that is less contrived, long and doesn’t take itself too seriously! Believe me, if they did it in 2 hours and would be a bit more fun and loose, more people would watch and would care!! The selfie bit was the closest thing to making it more modern and light… we need more of those kinds of moments!
A shorter ceremony could work some real wonders I reckon. Overall though this years was one of the better in recent memory.
Eddie
