Hitting our cinema screens in a mere few weeks’ time, Scott Cooper’s Johnny Depp led mobster/crime film Black Mass could well be one of the year’s most explosive films and judging by the trailers, a film that could see some of its actors achieve some awards love come the season that is ready to kick off now the Summer blockbuster merry go round is over.
With the potential for both critical love and a nice haul at the Box Office, Black Mass could be one of those rare films that not only finds itself on best of lists, but finds itself perched high above its competitors in Box Office takings.
It’s been sometime since we all were treated to an unquestionably great crime film and I for one am eagerly awaiting Black Mass’s release to see if the hype following its impending opening is in fact worthwhile and below are 5 reasons why you to should be getting set to go on the Whitey Bulger journey also.
As always, happy reading and happy watching!
1. Johnny Depp’s Potential Come Back
Let’s be honest, the last few years have not been kind to Johnny Depp and he can only but blame himself. Dark Shadows, The Lone Ranger, Transcendence and worst of all Mortdecai have single handily sent Johnny Depp back years and left him balancing precariously on the edge of becoming irrelevant but Black Mass looks set to once more showcase his immense talent he shows when he takes on the right material. His track record in the crime genre with films like Donnie Brasco and Blow is quite good so here’s hoping for the best. Early reports suggest that Oscars are not out of the equation for Captain Jack Sparrow.

2. The Stranger Than Fiction True Story
The story of Bulger and his dealings is just filled to the brim with narrative gold. From his explosive nature, the fact his brother was a well-known politician through to all the staples that makes the mobster/gangster genre such a beloved medium for film, Black Mass should be both entertaining, thrilling and unbelievable if it weren’t all true.

3. The Supporting Cast
Now this is a cast! Surrounding a hopefully on form Depp is Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch, The Gift’s Joel Edgerton, Ant-Man’s Corey Stoll, Cop Car’s Kevin Bacon, Breaking Bad’s Jesse Plemons, Jarhead’s Peter Sarsgaard and Party Down’s Adam Scott. Not to be outdone by the males, the ladies of the cast include 50 Shades of Grey’s Dakota Johnson and Killer Joe’s Juno Temple and with that we have one of the years most loaded ensembles that suggest many saw the huge potential on offer here with a raft of great characters in a narrative bursting at the seams with cinematic gold.

4. Scott Cooper
The actor turned director may not have set the world on fire with his two previous directing outings in the form of the Jeff Bridges led Crazy Heart and the almost great Out of the Furnace but there was enough in both those pictures to suggest that Cooper wasn’t far away from making something truly great. Black Mass perhaps marks the old saying of third time lucky.

5. Could be the Next “Classic” Mobster Film
It hasn’t been a great few years for the Mob genre of films, Gangster Squad promised a lot and delivered very little, Public Enemies had moments but failed too often while Savages and The Counselor didn’t even make a mark, so it’s about time that the genre that made such waves in the 80’s and 90’s made a spectacular return to form. On face value, Black Mass has all the elements to see it enter into the echelon of classic mobster films.

Black Mass hits Australian screens on Thursday October 15th
Are you excited for Black Mass? Are you over Depp and his crazy antics or will this be the role that once more brings him back to popularity? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
I have to admit I have been lukewarm about this one but your review has me rethinking that! I agree, it looks like Depp’s getting back to his darker, dramatic Donnie Brasco days. Definitely looking forward, now!
I reckon this one could be a real ripper 🙂

Omg Johnny Depp looks different 😦
Yeh he most certainly does, looks like Captain Jack has fallen on bad times.
E
I’m from the Boston area so this has been on my radar for awhile. I really hope this is indeed Depp’s big comeback!
Me to. I think this will be a big hit over in the States.
E
Definitely. Especially since Bulger became almost a myth-like man.
Yeh I can’t wait to learn a little bit more about him!
E
Truly a nasty piece of work!

…But mostly Benedict Cumberbatch
Nice article. I feel like Cooper’s previous films had so much potential but never quite sealed the deal for me.
Third times a charm I believe mate.
E
I can’t wait for this one. Thanks guys.
Glad your’re on board as well mate 🙂
E
Well you’ve certainly got me excited for this! Great article!

Must watch
I’m really excited for this film too. I liked Scott Cooper’s Out of the Furnace and the premise to Black Mass sounds interesting but the main reason I’m excited is Johnny Depp returning to form and I’m already hearing great things about this movie.
Yeh for sure the advance buzz since its premiere has been really strong! I can’t wait to see it.
E
I couldbn’t agree with number 1 more
Great to hear Nathan.

Really difficult not to get hyped for this, even despite Depp’s excruciatingly bad last few outings. And what an ensemble cast to go along with it. Look forward to seeing this at the end of the week!
Oh nice man, we have to wait a little longer down this way so will keep my eyes peeled for your take!

Looking forward to this one. Thought CRAZY HEART (2009) and OUT OF THE FURNACE (2013) were decent drama elevated by very good performances. Hoping for fireworks with this one!
I am officially excited following this post.
Job done then Abbi, lets hope I am not to far off the mark.

I’m also massively hoping this is a comeback for Depp. Fear and Loathing and Blow are two incredible performances and it’s a shame what’s happened lately. Transcendence is one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. Although I’ve got to say I have an embarrassing soft spot for The Lone Ranger.
Lone Ranger had nothing on Transcendence – that film was utterly deplorable!
