To celebrate Sean Bean’s birthday that took place over the last week, why not have a look at the man’s many great on screen deaths?
Dying roughly 25 plus times in a career that’s spaned 31 years and 100+ feature film/TV show appearances, it must be somewhere in British actor Sean Bean’s contract that he must die!
Dying almost more times than any actor before him (John Hurt’s died a lot though) it’s quite fun in a morbid type of way to look over and rank the greatest deaths of Sean Bean’s career.
Oh and in case you didn’t realise – this post is literally riddled with SPOILERS so read at your own peril.
10. Game of Thrones (2011)
Death by – public beheading.
Breaking our rule of not talking about TV here on J and E, this is one death that couldn’t be left out.
9. Don’t Say a Word (2001)
Death by – buried whilst alive.
In this slightly forgettable thriller, Sean Bean’s death remains a grisly highlight.
8. Lorna Doone (1990)
Death by – drowning in a mire.
A fairly average made for TV affair that co-stared a young Clive Owen, Lorna Doone featured the unsightly spectacle of Bean meeting his end in an English mire.
7. Patriot Games (1992)
Death by – boat anchor impalement. Then blown up for good measure.
One of many similar such 90’s thriller events, Patriot Games saw Bean on entertaining form until he was unfortunately impaled by a boat anchor and then sent off to the next life with a nice explosion.
6. Far North (2007)
Death by – frozen in the snow, while (Ned) stark naked!
It must be said, Far North is a little seen gem that’s worthy of your time and Bean delivers one of his most fully rounded performances that eventually sees him san-clothing die a slow and cold death.

Getting his evil on in the Island, the Karma bus was waiting for Sean however in the form of a grappling hook
5. The Island (2005)
Death by – a grappling hook through the neck. Oh and hung to boot.
This Michael Bay Sci-Fi/actioner may have a lot of haters but it’s a blast watched in the right mood and offers Bean a nice chance to “hang” around.
4. GoldenEye (1995)
Death by – an antenna, on fire!
A favourite Bond film too many (maybe due to the Nintendo 64 game) Goldeneye made Sean Bean a most hated man with his Bond backstabbing turn. But all was forgiven when he died a fiery death!
3. The Field (1990)
Death by – cows.
Not many more undignified ways of dying, getting chased off a cliff by a bunch of cows is both hilarious and depressing and is exactly what happened to Sean Bean in this little seen 90’s film.
2. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Death by – multiple arrows
Sad, epic and memorable, this might not be Bean’s most unique death but it’s certainly the one tinged with the most emotion. In a fantastic film, Bean’s death scene was almost the best of the lot.
1. Black Death (2010)
Death by – horses. Tied between two mares, Bean is slowly ripped apart.
Recently profiled here on J and E as an under-seen gem, Black Death features what just well could be Sean Bean’s most brutal and agonising deaths! Needing to be seen to be believed, this gives all new meaning to death by horses.

Black Death was so awesome.
When he opened his robe to reveal that, oh brother!
Such a good film that mate, and yeh that scene so awesome ha.
E
I’ve never seen Black Death, might have to give that one a go! Good old Sean Bean, always getting killed off somehow.
It’s really worth a go Anna, I had a great time!
E
Boromir’s death is one of my all-time favourite scenes in film. Brilliantly shot and Howard Shore’s score just breaks my heart. “I would have followed you, my brother… My captain… My king”
It’s a truely memorable death!
E
Nobody dies like Sean Bean!
His really mastered the art ha.
E
Though Michael Biehn did go through a phase where if he was in a film, you knew he was done for.
I reckon you’re right mate! Gotta love those guys that don’t mind dying for their art.
