As mentioned previously on the blog, I’m not overly excited about what this years Oscars represent but regardless it feels sacrilegious to not predict the winners and losers from Hollywood’s night of nights.
Host-less and seemingly more irrelevant then ever, here’s hoping some deserving film’s are recognized on the night.
Happy reading and happy watching.
Most Happy About:
Roma: Personally I find it great to see a seemingly small film like Roma get so many award nominations. A heartfelt passion project from director Alfonso Cauron, Roma’s a lovely film to watch as a cinema fan and Netflix’s official announcement to the big players of Hollywood.
Most Unhappy About:
Lack of nominations for First Man: I don’t want to sound like a broken record but First Man should’ve had far more than 4 nominations. A brilliant film that looked to tell a true life story in a different fashion than is to be expected, here’s hoping time will be kind to the film as people recognize it for the brilliant feat of film-making that it is.
It’s also sad masterful horror Hereditary received 0 nominations, especially for the great performance by Toni Collette.
Biggest Surprise:
Bohemian Rhapsody’s Best Picture Nomination: I can’t believe Bohemian Rhapsody made its way into the Best Picture field. It wasn’t at all a shock that lead actor Rami Malek got into his field but for the generic and far from outstanding film to be considered one of last year’s best products. Color me surprised.
Biggest Snub:
No Best Score recognition for Justin Hurwitz: Whether you liked First Man or not, many would have to agree that composer Justin Hurwitz moving score was one of the finest produced last year. It’s a shame that his outstanding work wasn’t even recognized with a nomination.
Lucky to be There:
Black Panther: I’ve spoken a lot about this; Black Panther is in these awards not for its final product but for what it represents for the industry. While it’s great to see change taking place, film’s should still be recognized on cinematic merits not for anything else and at the end of the day, Black Panther is just an entertaining comic book movie, nothing more and nothing less, very far from what should be being celebrated at these awards.

The fact that The Dark Knight never got nominated should mean that Black Panther is deemed by the Academy to be a superior film. I thought BP was great but there are obviously a lot of political elements coming into the decision making when picking winners rather than films that take risks and take us into territory we have never seen before.
As for Bohemian Rhapsody, I enjoyed that too and Rami Malek was excellent but to me it wasn’t much better than the INXS television series from a few years ago.
I used to get excited about the Oscars but now I have better things to do with my time.
I agree with all points mate.
I still can’t believe the Dark Knight was ignored by the Oscars for Best Picture.

I’ll have to disagree on Black Panther. As usual some of the best films of the year (Sorry to Bother You, First Reformed), etc are underrepresented and of what actually is represented it’s just as good as anything. I think it both had a unique aesthetic and a very well written villain in Killmonger and both of those things set it a notch above your typical blockbuster.
Panther isn’t a bad film and you’re right, Killmonger is a good villain but in the end of the day, this is just a genuinely by the numbers Marvel film that follows a very familiar arc albeit with a different flavour.
In my mind, Infinity War was actually a more out of the ordinary superhero film that was by far the better film.
E
Spike Lee best director. you know why, so i wont repeat myself.
Should be an interesting night mate, if anyone bar Cauron wins for Best Director I will be pretty shattered.
