The world was ready for another Scary Movie, after the recent success of The Naked Gun reboot and the streaming numbers for Downtown Abby parody Fackham Hall, there has been proof that the appetite for dumb comedies is alive and well.
Arriving 26 years after the first iteration of the franchise burst its way onto cinema screens and 13 years after the dire Scary Movie 5 seemingly killed the brand for good, Scary Movie comes to us courtesy of the returning Wayan’s brothers, who return to the brand they once helped oversee with support from director Michael Tiddes but the problem for them and us is the fact Scary Movie just isn’t very funny and mostly plain embarrasing.
With much pre-release hype around the film coming from the fact this new franchise entry was going all out to offend and target everyone and everything with its satirical look at recent horror entries and modern-day politics, the final result is a childish film that goes for the lowest hanging fruit in most instances with a few minor jokes, a throwaway line about cult horror It Follows one such example, the only thing saving it from being regarded as one of the worst entries into the brand so far.
Generating extra buzz thanks to its rounding up of original cast members that includes Anna Faris, Regina Hall and Dave Sheridan, there’s some early nostalgia that carries some good feelings towards Tiddes feature but that quickly disappears when we are thrown into a downright atrocious plot line that rehashes old jokes and forces comedy onto us rather than letting anything happen organically and by the time the film enters into its second half you will be begging for mercy from the hands of the films masked killer.
It’s such a shame for us and the series that the creative team couldn’t find more to do with recent horror smashes like Get Out, Sinners, Final Destination, Scream or The Substance, there’s so much material ripe for the riffing but mostly Scary Movie is filled with the type of humour you’d expect from teenagers in their first few years of high school and while that juvenile humour has its time and place, when its prevalent for 90 plus minutes, there’s not a lot of hope for any of us.
The other factor hurting Scary Movie throughout is the fact that all the returning legacy cast members appear to be here purely for the nice juicy pay cheque and while no one can blame them, it’s depressing to see such listless acting turns from performers who all should and could do better with new cast members such as Olivia Rose Keegan, Cameron Scott Roberts and Savannah Lee Nassif left to do a lot with not a lot to try and bring some energy to the lifeless product.
There’s a place for a film like Scary Movie to play in in today’s viewing climate, a place where silliness and the opportunity to poke fun at our sometimes overly serious and soft society is encouraged but after this attempt to breathe life into a long dormant franchise has ended up the way in which it has, our comedic salvation might have to come from another form of saviour.
Final Say –
Filled with tired and flat jokes that are nowhere near as biting as the creative team would’ve had us believe in the lead up, Scary Movie is a weak and frequently annoying return that is hard to recommend outside of a few quotable lines and moments.

That sounds worse than I expected it to be.
I was ready to enjoy it, but it was a real failure to launch. It’s not like you don’t expect the juvenile nature of the film but it’s just painfully unfunny and lame.
