A genuine case of so close yet so far, Kirill Sokolov’s low-budget genre mash up They Will Kill You has a lot to admire and an equal amount that leaves a lot to be desired, combining to make a film that’s entertaining and energetic, but also one that’s frustratingly unable to become the feature it just might have been.
Seemingly dumped into the marketplace without much love from its studio over the past few months around the globe, They never really stood a chance to stand out in a crowded industry unless it gained mind-blowingly good reviews, with its fate now destined to lie in the fact it’s highly likely to become a cult favourite over the coming years.
A dark comedy that wears its action, horror and supernatural beats like a badge of honour, Sokolov and his leading lady Zazie Beetz (proving once more she’s up for getting her hands dirty) showcase an enthusiasm for their product and They can be commended for getting stuck straight into the thick of the action as Beetz’s more than capable big sister on a mission Asia attempts to free her younger estranged sister Maria from the grips of a strange NYC high-rise community.
The type of uniquely designed film that would be best for viewers to head into blind, forgoing the far too revealing trailers if that’s an option, They is an unapologetically wild B-movie that relishes in its bloody carnage and crazy concepts, making it an experience that won’t be for all tastes but perfect for those looking for a demented and devilishly designed outing.
Recruiting a recognisable if not exactly A-list ensemble cast, highlights of which include a randomly accented Patricia Arquette as high-rise overseer Lily Woodhouse and another Weasley like turn from Harry Potter fan favourite Tom Felton as resident Kevin, Sokolov’s film benefits greatly from Beetz’s heavy-lifting lead turn, with Beetz getting her John Wick on when it comes to dispatching a seemingly endless procession of out to kill goons.
Long a fantastic support in many a notable outing such as Joker, Deadpool 2 or hit TV series Atlanta, Beetz hasn’t had the chance to lead too many of her own features yet and while the film around her is rough around the edges and far from high-brow, Beetz’s full-bodied and high intensity performance here as Asia is a notable moment in the career of the bright talent who should be getting a lot more leading lady roles over the coming years.
Failing to make its mark across its original release period, we shouldn’t be surprised if we see They gain traction over the coming months as word of mouth around the right parts of town spread, heralding in news of a bloody and silly outing that embraces its nature for better and worse.
Final Say –
If you can forgive its trespasses and rough around the edges approach, They Will Kill You should provide you with a fun 90-minute diversion that does wonders showcasing the undeniable talents of its leading lady, who is more than ready to break into the big time at any moment.
