There’s a lot of added pressure heaped upon movie sequels, as usually a sequel comes about due to the initial entry being a beloved property, increasing expectations on the respective follow-ups to be as good, if not better than what has come before.

For the most part, sequels fail to match it with what has come first but history has proven to us that there’s enough gold out there in the sequel space to prove that not only can a film match it with what’s come before when the stars align, they can even better it, an achievement all the films below have achieved.

Bringing this list down to 10 made the culling process a difficult one, leaving some fabulous films just outside the final choices.

Below is a collation of films that evolved the formula of what had come before, surprised us and wowed us, all timers that went against the grain and established themselves as worthy of the name they hold.

10. Dawn of the Dead (1978)

During an escalating zombie epidemic, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter and his TV executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.

Following on from George A. Romero’s independent sensation The Night of the Living Dead from 1968, Dawn of the Dead may not be a film you instantly associate to being a sequel as it follows a whole new collection of characters and ramps up the action in a major way but it’s a hugely enjoyable offering that redefined the zombie genre for good. Taking place in an at the time unique setting and mixing in social commentary with humour, scares, blood and creativity, Dawn of the Dead is a legendary follow up that is arguably Romero’s finest hour.

9. Toy Story 2 (1999)

When Woody is stolen by a toy collector, Buzz and his friends set out on a rescue mission to save Woody before he becomes a museum toy property with his roundup gang Jessie, Prospector, and Bullseye.

Even the most eager and easy to please fans had no idea just what Pixar was cooking up for the better part of 4 years with this sequel to the industry defining 1995 smash hit Toy Story. Taking a major step forward in the technology space but also importantly keeping the heart and soul of the story and characters front and centre, Toy Story 2 remains a stunning achievement that continues to be enjoyed by new and old fans alike.

8. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

While Frodo and Sam edge closer to Mordor with the help of the shifty Gollum, the divided fellowship makes a stand against Sauron’s new ally, Saruman, and his hordes of Isengard.

Proving that the success of The Fellowship of the Ring the year prior was no fluke, Peter Jackson and his merry band of crew came out swinging with The Two Towers, a film that ramped up the spectacle and stakes in a big way. Famed for its stunning battle of Helm’s Deep, Two Towers also gave us a proper Gollum experience amongst a raft of other memorable ingredients, all helping lead the series towards the legendary finale that was The Return of the King.

7. Dune: Part Two (2024)

Paul Atreides unites with the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the universe, he endeavours to prevent a terrible future.

A film that feels slept on in some ways despite its fantastic audience reactions and solid box office returns, Dune: Part Two is a stunning feat of filmmaking in a multitude of ways and an epic that demanded to be seen on the biggest screen possible. Building off the great foundation of Part One, Part Two of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi series had it all and instantly established itself as one of the quintessential films of the modern era and the sci-fi genre.

6. Aliens (1986)

Decades after surviving the Nostromo incident, Ellen Ripley is sent out to re-establish contact with a terraforming colony but finds herself battling the Alien Queen and her offspring.

Steering clear of the claustrophobic dread inducing set-up of Ridley Scott’s famed original series entry, James Cameron created a whole new beast entirely with his beloved sequel Aliens. Loading his film with colourful characters, action set-pieces for days and a playfulness that has rarely been on display more in Hollywood filmmaking, Aliens gave viewers an experience they had never seen before and likely didn’t quite expect initially. Standing the test of time, Aliens remains one of the most rewatchable and enjoyable movie going experiences you can have.

5. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

A cyborg from the future, identical to the one who failed to kill Sarah Connor, must now protect her ten-year-old son John from an even more advanced and powerful cyborg.

Taking all the ingredients that made the original 80’s affair such a beloved hit, James Cameron ensured that Judgement Day wouldn’t follow the exact the same recipe, culminating in a film that was able to surprise, entertain and thrill in equal measure. With memorable set-pieces, fantastic characters and endlessly quotable dialogue, Judgement Day is an all-time classic that managed to best its predecessor against the odds.

4. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

The story involves Maverick confronting his past while training a group of younger Top Gun graduates, including the son of his deceased best friend, for a dangerous mission.

It might have taken 36 years to arrive after the original, but the wait was most certainly worth it when it came to 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick. Bringing back original star Tom Cruise, Maverick found the Hollywood superstar teaming up with director Joseph Kosinski to deliver a cinematic outing that became a must-see cultural phenomenon. Providing much in the way of feasts for the senses, Maverick at the same time told a heart-felt story that while playing it safe in ways, still managed to surprise and thrill. Easily one of the best modern-day examples of audience pleasing Hollywood blockbusters.

3. Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

After the Empire overpowers the Rebel Alliance, Luke Skywalker begins training with Jedi Master Yoda, while Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett pursue his friends across the galaxy.

The pressure was on The Empire Strikes Back in 1980 following the world-changing success of A New Hope, but that pressure seemingly didn’t matter as director Irvin Kershner and his crew smashed expectations out of the park with a film that would quickly become even more adored than its forefather. An incredible mix of sci-fi imagination, unique characters, spectacle and storytelling wizardry, The Empire Strikes Back is deserving of its reputation as a king of cinema history.

2. The Dark Knight (2008)

When a menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman, James Gordon and Harvey Dent must work together to put an end to the madness.

Nothing could prepare the movie-going world for The Dark Knight, sadly because of the tragic pre-release passing of star Heath Ledger but also due to the fact Batman Begins was a mere entree compared to Christopher Nolan’s crime masterpiece. A monumental film for numerous ways, The Dark Knight became an instant classic on release and has only grown in reputation since.

1. The Godfather Part II (1974)

The early life and career of Vito Corleone in 1920s New York City is portrayed, while his son, Michael, expands and tightens his grip on the family crime syndicate.

Doing what felt like the impossible, Francis Ford Coppola arguably bettered his 1972 Mafia crime classic The Godfather with the sprawling epic that was Part 2. Here enlisting the support of new cast member Robert De Niro playing a young Vito Corleone while bringing back the legendary ensemble cast of Coppola’s first film, Part 2 is the type of against the odds effort that has never been bettered when it comes to the sequel space.
