Kaouther Ben Hania’s Oscar nominated docudrama The Voice of Hind Rajab is one of recent memories most unique undertakings, one that weaves together real-life voice recordings of an horrific incident that occurred in Gaza when IDF personal reigned down terror upon unsuspecting victims.

Building her ticking time bomb drama around the Red Crescent voice calls that took place between their staff and 6-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab, who had unfortunately found herself trapped in a family car in the midst of a terrifying life and death battle in Gaza, Voice takes a Paul Greengrass like approach to its material, creating a white-knuckle viewing experience that is powered by its incorporation of the true incidents.

Throwing viewers headfirst into this hectic world of the Red Crescent call centre, there’s little build up time to Hania’s film, as it instead cuts right to the chase and immerses us in a chaotic situation where every minute counts as the dedicated call centre operatives do their best in a terrible set of circumstances that no one should ever have had to endure.

A tale that will hit home for anyone with children or those familiar with the sadly long-standing conflicts between Israel and Palestine, Hania’s film is raw and powerful one on a human level and even though the performances built around the real-life audio recordings can at times morph into being overplayed, there’s little doubt that Hania’s effort has struck a chord here that has contributed to Voice becoming a globally recognised feature.

A recipient of various awards and nominations at festival and awards shows such as The BAFTAS, The Golden Globes, Venice Film Festival and European Film Awards, Voice has attracted much interest from a wide-ranging series of people and places, Hollywood heavyweights Brad Pitt, Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix were but a few notable names that joined the film as executive producers, all sensing the films universal appeal and important to highlight story.

A thoughtful and considered experience that never dulls across its brief 80 or so minutes of running time, Voice may not be an easy watch but it’s one that commands your attention and displays once more the senselessness of conflicts that continue to ruin innocent people’s lives.

Final Say –

While there’s some overacting on display in the films dramatized segments, there’s a truth and power to much of The Voice of Hind Rajab that make this experience a unique and necessary one.
