In what has been an overwhelmingly quiet and lacklustre period for films both critically and commercially over the last few weeks things look set to change dramatically with the impending release of Gone Girl in the first week of October.
Gone Girl has built up significant hype thanks to its large book fan base and when the announcement was made that famed director David Fincher was at the helm of the motion picture adaptation hype was only intensified. Whilst casting choices of both Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike has caused the ire of some rabid fans early footage and industry speculation suggest the film will quickly put to rest any of those concerns.
At the start of the year I named Gone Girl as my 3rd most anticipated movie of the year and with the film mere weeks away it seems like as good of a time as ever to share my personal thoughts on just why you should be counting down the days until the film hits the big screen.

- The source novel by Gillian Flynn:
One of the most talked about books of recent times surely amounts to one of the most talked about movies of the year? Flynn’s book has been praised for its mixture of social commentary, dark humour and mystery infused plot and the mixing of these elements looks set to explode on screen. If the movie even has half the inventiveness of the source material, we cinemagoers are in for a real treat! Read some praise for Flynn’s book here below –
- The intriguing casting:
Director David Fincher has always had a keen eye for casting, Pitt in Seven/Fight Club, Rooney Mara in Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and countless others and Gone Girl looks to follow that trend. While Affleck is a well-known and proven lead the supporting turns by Rosamund Pike, Neill Patrick Harris, Missi Pyle, Tyler Perry and even model Emily Ratajkowski should all be watched very closely with Pike and Harris in particular possibilities of a big break out turn. - The trailers:
Always a master of the visual life and mood of a film Fincher’s distinct directional tone looks to have been used to great effect in what we’ve been privy to in the early trailers. To accompany the atmospheric surrounds the actors, script and ominous mystery surrounding these characters seems to combine to great effect. - The screenplay:
Authors adapting their own work for the big screen can sometimes be fraught with danger and decidedly mixed results but under the tutelage of a wise head like David Fincher, one suspects that Gillian Flynn adapting her famous words for the big screen can result in a great success. - It’s a David Fincher film/adaptation! :
All film lovers should be well and truly across the fact that Fincher’s catalogue of films is one of the highest order. From Se7en through to Zodiac and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo through to The Social Network there is little doubt that the man possesses some serious directional talent. Fincher’s ability to adapt novels successfully on screen is also great cause for optimism in what should be a movie for audiences and critics alike and a huge success at the box office and a player at this year’s awards circuit. Great post, it’s one of my most anticipated movies for the rest of the year as well. I haven’t read the book yet but I plan to once I see this movie.
Should be a real ripper this one! I think it will change up a little from the book which could be neat in some areas to.

Sure am! Awesome review and it only intensified my desire to see it. I ♥ Rosamund Pike ever since Sense and Sensibility and thought she was perfectly cast in Surrogates. Fincher always delivers; I’m glad to see he’s back and look forward to what he comes with behind the camera.
He is such a master behind the camera Cindy, I think his the perfect man to tackle this tale for the big screen. Should be a real blast to catch it at the movies.

I loved the book and can’t wait to see the film. I’m happy with the casting of Affleck and Pike. Hope they won’t disappoint in their roles!

Mega amped! Its my most anticipated movie and Gone Girl is one of my top 5 favorite novels ever 🙂 There are no words to describe the genius of it all.
Watching the trailer again yesterday just made me realise how close we are to it and how good it looks. Can’t wait.

I’ve had an odd love/hate relationship with the book. I finished it quickly yet am still kind of undecided about it, there were a lot of things I didn’t like. However, it was the same with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which I think is an awesome adaptation. Basically in Fincher I trust. Plus I think the casting of Rosamund Pike is spot-on.
Only mere days now until we witness what is hopefully one of the years best mate.
